In Nomine Lucis, a Work by Pascal Dusapin for the Pantheon: Polymorphous Expression in the Service of the Sacred and the Profane

     Le Panthéon de Paris abrite aujourd’hui une oeuvre pérenne de Pascal Dusapin intitulée In Nomine Lucis. Commandée par le président Emmanuel Macron à l’occasion de la panthéonisation de Maurice Genevoix le 11 novembre 2020, elle est destinée à intégrer le Panthéon de manière pérenne. Le matériau de l’oeuvre et son fonctionnement en font une véritable sculpture sonore. Cependant, l’oeuvre ne peut être dissociée du lieu qui l’abrite. La fonction de cette commande publique exceptionnelle nous oblige à comprendre l’oeuvre dans une dimension politique et religieuse. Elle intègre un lieu de mémoire marqué à la fois par le sacré et le profane. En tant qu’objet polymorphe, elle revêt plusieurs formes d’expressions et porte plusieurs significations, unissant la volonté politique à la création artistique.

     The Pantheon of Paris now houses a perennial work by Pascal Dusapin entitled In Nomine Lucis. Commissioned by President Emmanuel Macron on the occasion of the pantheonization of Maurice Genevoix on November 11, 2020, it is intended to integrate the Pantheon in a sustainable way. The material of the work and its functioning make it a true sound sculpture. However, the work cannot be dissociated from the place where it is housed. The function of this exceptional public commission obliges us to understand the work in a political and religious dimension. It incorporates a place of memory marked by both the sacred and the profane. As a polymorphic object, it takes on several forms of expression and carries several meanings, uniting political will with artistic creation.

     Arthur Skoric est agrégé de musique et doctorant contractuel à Sorbonne Université et à l’Université de Montréal. Par ailleurs, il est organiste titulaire de l’orgue de chœur de la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, organiste co-titulaire de l’église Saint Pierre-le-Jeune catholique de Strasbourg, et concertiste international. Auteur d’un ouvrage intitulé « Les vertus cardinales et théologales en Alsace : représentations et fonctions » publié aux éditions de l’Association des Presses Universitaires de Strasbourg, son mémoire de maîtrise, intitulé « La pensée religieuse de Vincent d’Indy », est en cours de publication aux éditions L’Harmattan.

     Arthur Skoric is agrégé of music and a contractual PhD student at Sorbonne University and the University of Montreal. He is also the titular organist of the choir organ of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Strasbourg, the co-titular organist of the Saint Pierre-le-Jeune Catholic Church in Strasbourg, and an international concert performer. Author of a book entitled “Les vertus cardinales et théologales en Alsace: représentations et fonctions” published by the Association des Presses Universitaires de Strasbourg, his master’s thesis, entitled “La pensée religieuse de Vincent d'Indy”, is currently being published by Éditions L’Harmattan.
