The paper is dedicated to the modeling of tonal schemata within analytical contexts and investigates their inner syntactic constitution as well as their combinations. Tonal schemata are voiceleading schemata coupled with harmonic interpretations. In this proposal harmony is represented through a structural bass. Aim of the paper is to elucidate the interplay of contiguous structural and linear bass patterns within tonal schemata across different idioms within common practice tonal music, including jazz and pop. The study concentrates on three schemata: Prinner, Monte and Fonte and involves the formal modeling of basic and nested patterns (involving these three). A practical purpose is the implementation of an interface between formal entries in a schema lexicon and analytical expressions, allocated in musical scores. The work is exploratory and is anchored in a collection of musical examples and their formal representations. In order to integrate structural and linear patterns into hierarchical syntagms a concrete production grammar for nested diminutions is presented and tested on these analytical examples. Conditions for an extension of this grammar are formulated with regard to the incorporation of a second voice and with regard to more flexible syntagms.
A first result is a classification of typical couplings of voice leading schemata with structural modes. These provide a suitable discrimination for the structuring of a schema lexicon. The method disentangles the determination of the harmonic substance from Caplin’s further-reaching form-functional discrimination. For the study of scheme combinations nested diminutions (via a production grammar) form a useful point of departure.
